Jurassic Park III

JIRASSIC PARK III (2011)

Director: Joe Johnston

Studio: Universal studio

Main cast: Sam Neill, William H. Macy, Tea Leoni, Alessandro Nivola, Trevor Morgan

As shown in a title, Jurassic Park 3 is a third movie of Jurassic Park series. This time, instead of Steven Spielberg, Joe Johnstor had directored this movie.

Point of View and voice is Omniscent, and the narrative of this movie is Linear. Its quite obvious survival story. The brief structure/story of this movie is;

: Years later from previous movie, which is Jurassic Park 2, Dr. Alan Grant struggles with a lack of money for his new research-> One rich parent lost their son-> Get a helper, who is Dr. Alan Grant and his assistance, and hired soldier to find their son-> They get traped at the island (all hired soldier died, 5 left)-> rich parent's 'rich' turns to be lie. they are not rich-> one died, and they splited into 2 group (4 left, 3 and 1-Dr. Grant alone)-> Dr. Grant meets the son, Eric-> 2 group meets (5 ppl)-> danger again, Bill is gone (4 ppl)-> Gives egg back to velociraptor-> Rescued.

Themes that I can find from Jurassic Park 3 is a survival, danger, science and family.

Mise-en-scene of this movie is, modern time period but with some advanced technology of biology. Places mostly took at sea, forest, river, and city. Mainly at natural places. Costume is casual look as well as survival look. Mostly natural lighting. During this film, the mood is very thilled and dangerous.

A special camera movent which it was memoriable is Aerial shot of showing a land of dinorsaur, and a lots of shallow focusing when dinorsaur is behind the protagonists.

During the movie, I couldn't really find any obvious montages. Ususally used other editing techniques to cover the film. Cross-cutting, continuity cutting, slow motion and etc.

Digetic sound was often used when dinosaur appears, but character does not know. Voice of dinosaur, their breathing, moving and etc. I really liked when they breathe. Non-digetic sound was often used when they have a battle. A theme music of Jurassic Park has used again and again. This song is so famous. I think it is really cool!!

Genre for Jurassic Park 3 is a survival/monster horror, alternative future science fiction, and action thriller. I think the main genre is survival horror, because it is mainly focused on surviving from dinosaurs.

Props that I was interested of was a phone, flute, and egg. Especially with phone. It reminded me of crocodile in peter pan. It was funny.

While watching this movie, I felt really angry with parents, especially mother. They gave poo to Dr. Grant, but they-mother-never felt sorry to him and think that was wrong thing to do at all.

Poor other people. Everytime, only maincharacter and he/she's small group is alive and others just always all dead. (Even Dr. Grant's assistant Bill, was alived......)
Memoriable scene is the first scene, people gone from boat, and last scene, pterodactyl(?) was flying with helicopter. It was because, first scene, I was not able to get an answer of 'why they dissapeared'. Proberbly sea-dinorsaur, but I can't rememver seeing any of them. And for last scene, I was so curioused that 'how people not scared of they-pterodactyl:flying dinosaur-going out of island'. They are dangerous as well, but they just say oh..its journey...... what!?

Anyway, overall mark is;

★★★☆☆
: I quite enjoyed watching this movie,
but only because it has cool graphic features.
I probably noy watch it again. I'll rather watch Jerassic Park 1 or 2

The Forbidden Kingdom

THE FORBIDDEN KINGDOM (2008)

Narrative of this is Linear, voice is omniscient and second person, and pov is omniscient.

Themes in this movie is crime, legend, fighting, and revenge.

Mise-en-scene is in modern time period as well as historical. Place is held in Chinatown-in real world-, desert, forest and mountain-in fantasy world-. Usually nature-in fantasy world-place have been used. With costume, usually they wear a historical clothing of china.

Lots of flash-back montage has used to review the legend. Fast-forward technique have been used to show how the main character's martial arts skill has improved. Extreme long shot was used at the beginning, when main character just came to fantasy world.

Usually digetic sound have used to be effictive for action of fighting with martial arts. Non-digetic sound-funny music-have used with a legend's character's action.

Genre of this movie is hero/mixed world Fantasy and martial arts Action adventure.

Score of this movie;

★★★☆☆

: It was enjoyable to watch their martial action,

especially with Jackie Chan's trademark, comedy marticl action.

It kind of reminded me to watch other film of his.

But on the other hand, without this martial act, it was so basic hero-story line.

21 (2008)

Director: Robert Luketic
Original book: Bringing down the house
Author: Ben Mezrich
Main cast: Jim Sturgess, Kevin Spacey, Kate Bosworth

Narrative structure is linear, voice is 1st person and omniscient, and pov is omniscient. Storyline structure of this film is;

: problem of money, can't get scholarship-> solved by doing card counting-> comflict with Micky-> do it without him-> got cought-> problem of money, graduation-> solved, dragged Micky again-> got money-> money is gone-> got scholarship

Themes shown in this film is money, love, life, gambling, and study.

Mise-en-scene of this movie is, held in modern time period. Main place is in Las Vegas. Costumes are casual look and formal look which makes difference between not in Las Vegas, and in Las Vegas. Mood of this film is very entertaining, exciting and little gloomy.

Props used in this movie is card, casino, money, airplane, and survalience camera

Special camera work is Aerial shot, with panning to show Las Vegas effectively. Slow motion whin Ben was nervous at the airport.

Montage at the beginning of doing blackjack and winning as well as explaining-non digestic sound-about "card counting" which makes the viewer interesting. Other montage during movie, whole time, that when he counts the card and remembers the code of counting. (ex) sweet=+16 and shows the scene when he were learning with paper fliping). Fast-forward have been used for first time he went for card counting. it made it quick, so the audience can see how successful he was.

Interesting techniques used with lighting brightly, just after he successfully finished card counting and leaves the Casino, and gloomy lighting when he got caught and lost everything and leaves the Casino.

As I mentioned just above, non-digestic sound of explaing about card counting has used at the beginning. The best digetic sound in this movie is.. I think its a sound of card-fliping. Overall in this movie, digetic sound and non-digetic sound has used very skill-fully.

Genre of this movie is crime and drama.

Total score of this movie is;

★★★★★
: Eventhough I watched a several times, I still don't get card counting.
But it is really fun to watch even don't know what it is.
I really like this movie, I think story is so cool and nicely directed.
"Winner winner, Chicken dinner"
It was enjoyable to watch!!

Waste Land

WASTE LAND (2010)

Director: Lucy Walker
Editor: Pedro Kos
Cast: Vik Muniz

Narrative structure is linear, voice is 1st person and omniscent and point of view is omniscent. Storyline structure of this documentary is;
: study/research about how landfill's system works-> collect their story-> take photo-> make artwork-> show to them-> sell-> show after

A place is moving as;
: Rio (Brazil)-> New York-> Jardim Gramacho (Rio)-> London-> New York-> Jardim Gramcho

Themes shown in this documentary are recycling, life, family, struggle, pride, humanity, honesty, change, and social classes.

Mise-en-scene of this movie is, modern time period. Focused place is landfill, in brazil. Costumes are the clothes worn at landfill for collecting trashes and casual looking in usual. Mood of this film is truthful, dark and hopeful.

The props that was in my mind was-definately-trashes, birds, truck, camera and tv.

Special camera techniques are hand-held, zooming, close-up, fast forward, and extreme long shot. Hand-held shot is mostly used and zooming was like a real-life camera movement. Like home-made video. For interviewing, close-up shot was the most used shot. Fast forward was used with making artwork. Extreme long shot was frequently used to show the landfill as well as garbage pickers.

For editing, tags has been used for explaining their name/work etc information. Long take was used to hear stories. Montage was used in studio, for making artwork, as well as at the beginning.

Usually the voice/dialogue of explaining sounds are overlaping with next scene. Non-digetic sound with digetic sound to show effectively with the trashes/rubbishes/explaining his work. Mainly digetic sound is used in this documentary.

Genre for this film is obviously documentary, observational.

After watching this, I had a question about 'So, did they live better after all this?'. This question was briefly answered at the end, but I am not quite sure if they are happy or not.

Marks with my opinion is;

★★★☆☆
: It was not that boring, but since this film is in a cage of 'documentary'...
I am not sure that this film is giving suggestions with some educational learning.
Maybe 'save your things so don't make trashes too much', 'let's save energy in this earth'
'art makes money' and 'City is best'....
It was-kind of-worth watching it, but once is enough for me.

Studio: 20th century Fox studios

Main cast: James Franco, Freida Pinto, John Lithgow

The narrative of this film is Linear. Voice and pov is in omniscient.

Theme for this movie is family, love, animal, science, escape, and survival.

Mise-en-scene in this film is in modern period time, with advanced science in setting. Main place of this setting is home, company lab, and forest. Costume is lab costume, casual and no-costume (apes). Mood of this movie is cold, but warm at the same time, and strange.

Special camera works and editings are cross-cutting, aerial shot, tracking shot and montage.

Digetic sound when apes, at cage, talks to each other. Usually non-digetic sound when Main ape, Ciser, is at home or and at forest.

Genre for this movie is Science fiction, Action and Drama.

My score for this movie is;

★★☆☆☆

: When I first saw the trailer of this movie,

I thought it will be fun to watch but....I am thinking that trailer of this movie is so well made

that I felt it was no need to watch whole entire movie.

Story of this movie was so predictable and not enjoyable and fun.

If I see someone who asks me is it good to watch, I will say

"Just watch the trailer. That's all"

Memento

Memento (2000)

Director: Christopher Nolan

Main cast: Guy Pearce, Carrie-Anne Moss, Joe Pantoliano

Narrative structure of this movie is non-linear, which is in very complicated order like a puzzle. It has 4 or 5 timeline in one movie. Voice is in 1st person, and pov as well.

Themes in this movie are truth, revenge, memory, self-deception, time, perception, grief, puzzle, lying, and manipulation.

Important props used in this film (motif) are photo, tattos, telephone, car, hand writing, gun, notes and camera.

In this film, there are so many special camera movement and great editing have used. Such as, at the opening sequence, scene is going backwards like rewinding a video. During movie, flash-back montage was used. Also fast-forward and rewinding technique has used as well. But most important editing used in this movie will be 'going backwards' scene by scene, as movie runs.

Sound is usually with Lenny's narrative voice. So its usually non-digestic.

Genre of this movie is Thriller, Crime, and Drama

Score of this movie;

★★★★☆

: At the beginning of this movie, I was so confused.

Because I thought 'going backward' was just at opening scene, not the entire movie.

But after few scene have passed, I got used to it and thought it was entertaining.

I think this movie requires a lots of thinking.

Because it is in 1st person's point of view, we don't know if other character is bad or good.

Like Teddy, the police. I thought he was a fake police, which was same thinking with Lenny.

With the ending, it was also confusing. So which is truth and which is not?

Before I think a lot about the ending, I thought Teddy was right. but after, I don't know...

...Throught out this film, it is so confusing.

I think Director likes to not give solid ending.
