Waste Land

WASTE LAND (2010)

Director: Lucy Walker
Editor: Pedro Kos
Cast: Vik Muniz

Narrative structure is linear, voice is 1st person and omniscent and point of view is omniscent. Storyline structure of this documentary is;
: study/research about how landfill's system works-> collect their story-> take photo-> make artwork-> show to them-> sell-> show after

A place is moving as;
: Rio (Brazil)-> New York-> Jardim Gramacho (Rio)-> London-> New York-> Jardim Gramcho

Themes shown in this documentary are recycling, life, family, struggle, pride, humanity, honesty, change, and social classes.

Mise-en-scene of this movie is, modern time period. Focused place is landfill, in brazil. Costumes are the clothes worn at landfill for collecting trashes and casual looking in usual. Mood of this film is truthful, dark and hopeful.

The props that was in my mind was-definately-trashes, birds, truck, camera and tv.

Special camera techniques are hand-held, zooming, close-up, fast forward, and extreme long shot. Hand-held shot is mostly used and zooming was like a real-life camera movement. Like home-made video. For interviewing, close-up shot was the most used shot. Fast forward was used with making artwork. Extreme long shot was frequently used to show the landfill as well as garbage pickers.

For editing, tags has been used for explaining their name/work etc information. Long take was used to hear stories. Montage was used in studio, for making artwork, as well as at the beginning.

Usually the voice/dialogue of explaining sounds are overlaping with next scene. Non-digetic sound with digetic sound to show effectively with the trashes/rubbishes/explaining his work. Mainly digetic sound is used in this documentary.

Genre for this film is obviously documentary, observational.

After watching this, I had a question about 'So, did they live better after all this?'. This question was briefly answered at the end, but I am not quite sure if they are happy or not.

Marks with my opinion is;

★★★☆☆
: It was not that boring, but since this film is in a cage of 'documentary'...
I am not sure that this film is giving suggestions with some educational learning.
Maybe 'save your things so don't make trashes too much', 'let's save energy in this earth'
'art makes money' and 'City is best'....
It was-kind of-worth watching it, but once is enough for me.
